Tips for Creating Your Own Indoor Miniature Garden

Container. The best containers for little landscapes are shallow with large open surfaces. One with a drainage hole is best, but not necessary. If lacking a drainage hole, just make sure to place about 1-2 inches of rock at the bottom for excess water.

Potting Soil. Fill your container with potting soil (we recommend Miracle Grow) until it is just slightly under the brim of your container.

Layout Your Garden. Before planting your garden, place all your features on top of the soil to come up with a design game plan. Once you find a layout you like, get planting!

Choosing Plants. Choose slow-growing plants with similar water and light requirements. Visit our houseplant room for tons of options – there are always Plant Experts on hand if you get stuck.

Add Plants. remove enough potting soil to accommodate your plants. Loosen the roots of your plants by tugging gently on them and then plant.

Garden Features. When adding your miniatures, start with the big focal items first, like fairy homes. Then add your smaller features, including footpaths, ponds, sandy beaches and more. Then add your smallest items, including little critters, benches and your faries of course!

Lighting. Place your miniature garden in a bright area with indirect light.

Water. Use the finger test: stick your finger about an inch into the soil, if dry, water. If wet, wait to water.
